Sherlock Holmes took his bottle from the corner of the mantelpiece and his hypodermic syringe from its neat morocco case. With his long, white, nervous fingers he adjusted the delicate needle, and rolled back his left shirt-cuff. For some little time his eyes rested thoughtfully upon the sinewy forearm and wrist all dotted and scarred with innumerable puncture-marks. Finally he thrust the sharp point home, pressed down the tiny piston, and sank back into the velvet-lined armchair with a long sigh of satisfaction. Three times a day for many months I had witnessed this performance, but custom had not reconciled my mind to it. On the contrary, from day to day I had become more irritable at the sight, and my conscience swelled nightly within me at the thought that I had lacked the courage to protest. Again and again I had registered a vow that I should deliver my soul upon the subject, but there was that in the cool, nonchalant air of my companion which made him the last man with whom one would care to take anything approaching to a liberty. His great powers, his masterly manner, and the experience which I had had of his many extraordinary qualities, all made me diffident and backward in crossing him.

बहुत समय पहले एक गाँव में यानाम नामक एक बालिका रहती थी। पिछली बार की तरह इस बार भी गाँव में भयंकर महामारी फैली। पिछली महामारी में यानाम के परिवार से उसकी माँ, दीदी, भाई और दादी की जानें गई थीं। उससे पहले की महामारी उसके दादा-दादी, चाचा-चाची और उनके बच्चों को खा गई। अब केवल परिवार में यानाम और उसके पिता ही बचे रह गए थे। परंतु इस महामारी ने पिताजी को भी नहीं बख्शा। पिता की मृत्यु से इस नन्हीं जान को बहुत आघात पहुँचा । यानाम अपने पिता से बहुत प्रेम करती थी, वह तो पिता की लाड़ली राजकुमारी थी। पिता भी उस पर अपनी जान छिड़कते थे। पिता के असामयिक विछोह से यानाम को गहरा मानसिक आघात पहुँचा। गाँववाले जब पिता के शव को दफनाने के लिए ले जाने लगे तो यानाम बिलख-बिलखकर रोने लगी और पिता के शव से लिपटकर गाँववालों से कहने लगी- "शव को दफनाने नहीं दूँगी। शव यहीं पर पड़ा रहेगा, मैं उसकी देखभाल करूँगी।" यानाम के भोले मन को यह लगता था कि सर्वशक्तिमान दोत्री - पोलो (सूर्य-चंद्र) अवश्य उसका रुदन सुनेंगे और पुनः उसके पिता को जीवित कर देंगे । गाँववाले भोली यानाम को समझा-समझाकर थक गए कि मरने वाला कभी दोबारा जी नहीं उठता है। मगर यानाम अपनी जिद पर अड़ी रही, तनिक भी टस से मस नहीं हुई। अंततः गाँववालों को हारकर भारी मन से यानाम को रस्सियों से बाँधना पड़ा, ताकि समय से उचित संस्कारों के साथ शव को दफनाया जा सके।

A long time ago, a young girl named Yanam lived in a village. Just like the previous time, a terrible epidemic spread through the village again. In the earlier epidemic, Yanam had lost her mother, elder sister, brother, and grandmother. The epidemic before that had claimed the lives of her grandparents, uncle, aunt, and their children. Now, only Yanam and her father were left in the family. However, this epidemic did not spare her father either. Her father’s death caused a deep shock to the little girl. Yanam loved her father dearly; she was his beloved princess. Her father, too, adored her immensely. His untimely death left Yanam mentally devastated.When the villagers came to take her father’s body for burial, Yanam burst into tears. Clinging tightly to her father’s body, she cried out to the villagers, “I will not let you bury him. The body will remain here, and I will take care of it.” In her innocent heart, Yanam believed that the almighty Dotri-Polo (Sun and Moon) would surely hear her cries and bring her father back to life. The villagers tried repeatedly to explain to the innocent child that a dead person never comes back to life. But Yanam remained firm in her resolve and refused to move even slightly from her position. Finally, the villagers, with heavy hearts, had to tie Yanam with ropes so that her father’s body could be buried on time with proper funeral rites..
